Toyota Hilux Africa.
A fully digital world, cars and all. For Toyota's Hilux Africa campaign we built everything in CGI: the eroded canyons, the river crossings, the acacia trees and a stampede of Hilux trucks tearing through it all, led by Toyota Gazoo Racing rally trucks.
The campaign

Stills to motion
We love bringing a still campaign to life, and we give every project something unique. Here we turned the key visual into a cost-effective cinemagraph for social: dust kicking up from the tyres and clouds evolving overhead. Small touches of movement that draw the eye.
Behind the scenes
Creating worlds in the computer.
Our custom-built toolset lets us play God with the landscape, giving the client the exact vision they wanted for the campaign. We combine the latest erosion terrain tools with a biome toolset developed in-house, so every canyon, riverbank and tree sits exactly where the composition needs it.
-
Step 01Sculpting the land
The landscape starts as a sculpt, blocked out to the camera so the canyons frame the trucks.
-
Step 02Erosion at real scale
Erosion tools carve the rock faces and riverbanks, with displacement tuned at real-world scale.
-
Step 03Growing the biome
Acacias and scrub are grown procedurally, then scattered through the scene with our biome toolset.
-
Step 04Water and rock
River crossings and wet banks are dialled in so the trucks have something to splash through.
-
Step 05Light tests
Sun position and atmosphere are explored before the final camera is locked.
-
Step 06Car paint lookdev
Every Hilux is look-developed under HDR light, so the paint reads true to the real vehicle.
The rally trucks, built in CGI.
Hilux rally builds were modelled and look-developed in full race livery, then tested against photographic backplates so they could race straight into the scene.
